This month’s award of spurious mention of ‘suburb’ goes to…

December 12, 2010

… a BBC4 programme on The Art of Cornwall – shown earlier this month. This otherwise excellent programme seemed exercised by the fact that the cosmopolitan artistic group known as the St Ives School initially lived in the “suburb of St Ives, Carbis Bay”. Carbis Bay is indeed a residential area, one bay along from St Ives, but that does not make it its suburb. What seemed to really trouble the presenter was the fact that the Russian avant-garde constructivist artist Naum Gabo came to live there. How can art – let alone a whole new artistic movement – emerge from suburbia, you can see the presenter wondering.
